Grand Day Out!!

Tilbury Hotel outing for the staff

This fantastic picture shows my grandmother with other members of the Tilbury Hotel staff going on a ‘works’ day out. I think it is about 1890 and her name was Amelia Tucker. She worked in the laundry and also did some cooking at the hotel. The Charabanc looks so grand and the women in their posh bonnets. Does anyone else know anything about this trip…………where were they were going or who else is in the picture? I love the man with the accordion, who I am sure would have provided the music for the trip!

  • My grandfather, Robert Adams, 1850-97 was Superintendent of Tilbury Dock, and his house in Tilbury Gardens was less than 150 yards from the Hotel. I doubt however that the photo is dated around 1890. The Thorneycroft charabanc would surely have been more like the early 1920’s I have no doubt an expert on dating such vehicles will be able will be able to comment on this.
