A day trip to Margate

The group of people were on a day trip to Margate organised by Gordon Greenslade. It was in summer of 1951. All the people in the photo went out for the day and from left to right are the 3rd lady in is Shelia Stevens, then man at top near bus is Tom Daniels, then along to left at top is Joan Daniels and next to her is Frank Daniels. Then along the row is Shelia Ridges, next to the lady with glasses who is Mrs. Stevens and at the back of her is Mrs. Nora Daniels. Next to her is Miss Audrey Parker, the lady with hat is Mrs. Mabel Daniels, her hand is on George Ridges. On the front row is Gordon Greenslade with baby daughter Marilyn and next to Gordon is wife Pat. Behind Pat is Mr. Jack Bailey. Gordon’s dad had the coaches for the trip and Pat and Gordon organised the trip.

Do you know any of the missing names in this photo?

This photo was given to the site from George and Shelia Ridges who still live in Tilbury and have the barber shop G.W.D Ridges & Son in Dock road.

  • I can remember being taken on a trip to Margate, it must have been in the early 50s. I used to spend my holidays with an aunt Ada, think her surname was Harris. Her husbands name was Lesley, her dad’s name was Jim. Think uncle Lesley, had a farm – can remember the pigs and the horses, one was a big very gentle Shire, that we would sit on. The farm was sold for a housing project and they then moved to Mary St Chadwell – think it was on the Brentwood Road.
My paternal uncle also lived on, or near the farm and used to work on the ferry, his surname was Gamage, or Gammage, I don’t know much about him apart from him being my dads uncle. My dad was a merchant seaman from Australia.
If anyone is still on this site and knows anything about anyone, I would love to hear from them.

  • I have spoken to George and he says yes it is the longest established business in Tilbury. I have changed to G.W.D. Ridges………..thanks for spotting the mistake!

  • I think this should read G. W. D. Ridges.

Maybe George or Sheila will know but is this the longest established business still operating in Tilbury?
