Aussie day in Tilbury!

The crowds came out once again to support the Stories of Tilbury to Oz afternoon last Wednesday. Over 100 people came along to sample some Aussie snacks, including kangeroo steaks! Jonathan Catton was there and as usual gave an very interesting talk on the £10 Poms and the ships that left Tilbury with families hoping to start a new life in the sunshine. The Mayor, Deputy Mayoress, Annie O’Brien and Mike Sickler met the Captain of the Astor ship which was sailing to Australia. The trip will take be taking 38 days and have a stop over in South Africa. The event was to gather stories for the Tilbury and Chadwell memories website about the £10 Poms. Annie O’Brien said that the afternoon was  a great success and everyone after the talk were invited to walk down to the jetty to wave the ship off down the Thames. There were flags provided to wave and the captain arranged for the ship to toot it’s horn as it left Tilbury! It was quite an emotional scene as the ship’s passengers waved back at the crowds. Annie would like to thank the Cruise Terminal for all their help in the event and for all the volunteers that worked hard to make it a good afternoon. The event asked for a small donation of £3.00 and this raised £249.00 for the Tilbury Riverside Project and helps the project to be able to put on events like this for the community. Thank you for your donation!
