  • Hi Lily

Hope you have spoken to your Nan Kathleen?. Hope she is well. I’d love to hear from her.
Looking forward to chat about the “GOOD OLD DAYS”

    By Linda Gibbs (22/04/2021)
  • Yes I remember Mrs. Parkhurst very well and also remember her bringing you into the classroom and introducing you as “this is my son Christopher “. I imagine that this was due to you being a little younger and perhaps finishing earlier then coming into Mum’s for professional aftercare.

  • Can anyone remember my mother Mrs Nancy Parkhurst who taught in the infants school she was there for 40 years finishing as the headmistress?

  • Lovely to find that Kathleen has a grand-daughter!!
I was Linda Twydell (front row at left hand side)I’m now Linda Gibbs. Kathleen will remember me and she knew my husband Colin as we were all from Tilbury.
I have four grandchildren ( two boys and two girls).
They are not ” children” anymore…….
Eldest boy is 23, oldest girl is 21,next boy is 19, last girl is 17.
All from my daughter. I also have a son.
It would be lovely to hear from Kathleen.

  • Hi Lily,
I remember your grandmother and as I recall she had a younger sister who looked very similar to Kathleen. If I’m not wrong they lived above the shops (I think it was Commonwealth House). I also seem to remember that their father was a Tugboat skipper who was involved in an accident in Tilbury Dock when a steel hawser snapped.
I posted this photo almost 7 years ago and have been surprised at how little feedback there has been, I hope that you have greater success.

  • Hello all.
I know you don’t know me and I certainly don’t know any of you but I was doing some digging and i stumbled across this picture and 5th across on the top row is Kathleen Sagar (My Nan). I am not sure if anybody was close to her but if any of you were i’d love to know anything. She lives round the corner from me and i visit her every other day and she is lovely and bubbly and if anybody was friends with her, was she as bubbly then as she is now.
Best wishes to all of you,
    Lily age 13 and 3/4 (Kath’s Granddaughter)

  • I came across this site by accident. I knew George Angus at teacher training college. We were close friends and he visited me here, up north, quite a few times. Unfortunately and through my own stupid fault I lost touch with him. I would love to hear from him.

  • Perry, Both George and I lived in London Road opposite the Anchor Field. I knew Norman Wood but we were not related. We did hangout together as kids and if my memory is correct, he lived in Moore Avenue

    By Frederick Wood (20/08/2020)
  • I sat next to George Angus in class and as I remember his father was in the army serving in Korea at the time. I never saw George after manorway school although I remained in Tilbury and then Chadwell until 1970. I’d also be interested to know what became of him. Fred Wood are you related to the late Norman Wood?

    By Percy Dalton (10/08/2020)
  • George Angus shown on the photo was my boyhood pal. Does anyone know where he is now?

    By Frederick Wood (08/08/2020)
  • I see that George Angus is on this photo. We were boyhood friends and both lived in London Road though I attended Lansdowne Road School. I last saw George about 1968 when he was best man at my wedding at Grays Register Office. He took the photo of our day that has adorned the mantel piece of our many homes in several countries for the past 52 years. We lost contact over the years but I understand that he took up teaching , got married and moved away from Tilbury.

  • Janice Blake did you live next to the Anchor field the opposite side to Brennen road?

    By Percy Dalton (19/07/2020)
  • Janice Perrryman
There’s a blast from the past, you didn’t mention kids who were in your class at St. Chads? Unfortunately they are slipping away very quickly.
    Where are you now?

  • Just found this page. What memories it brought back! My maiden name was Janice Perryman (now a young at heart 73 year old). I started in Manorway primary school in Mrs Dines class and went on to Mrs Gardner’s class. Mrs Lawrence was a lovely music teacher. I remember being in Mr Newman’s class before leaving to go on to St Chads. I have fond memories of Reggie Girling and Danny Gilham and Bryan Tyson. Those were the days my friends!

  • I’ve only recently been put onto this site by my sister Sandra who lives in East Tilbury. The picture of our year at Manorway has been a revelation to me and I can only congratulate Percy, Paul and Brian on your powers of recall. The only comment I have to make on the staff is that I think the deputy head was Miss Atrill rather than Miss Atwell. I also have a photo somewhere of me and Digby the dog. I lived three doors away from Geoffrey Ring in Melba Gardens. Sadly, I understand from my sister that Geoff died about three or four years ago. I moved away from the Tilbury area in 1975 and lost touch with everyone, either from Manorway School and Grays Tech. I have lived in Scotland for over 36 years and after retiring from my job as a social worker have been settled on the island of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. The only other person I have any knowledge of from the photograph is Terry Vinton who is friendly with my sister and her husband. I see Terry occasionally when I am visiting family in East Tilbury. Terry married Phylis Kelly who was two years above us.

  • Andy,

You’re spot on I’ll be 67 in July and I’ve lived in SA since 1970 when I was 22.

Over the years I’ve been back to the UK many times and generally visit my brother so I have seen a lot of the changes, I guess it’s the same as everywhere – you can’t stop “progress”.

    Chris,

Yes I did know about Harry Bradley. I was over a few years ago and Chris Leach kindly got a whole group together when he still had the pub on the Heath (Greyhound) and Harry was amongst them, in fact he gave us a lift home to my brother’s. During a later visit Chris organised another get together in a Masonic hall in Grays and your brother David was there.

    Regards,

    Percy

  • Hi Percy, how long have you been living in South Africa, have you been back to Tilbury lately, been a lot of changes.

    By andy reynolds (10/02/2015)
  • Andy,

Thanks very much for that Andy, just what I needed on a Monday morning, I feel like I’ve just shuffled up a half dozen places in the queue!!

  • Hi Percy, sad to say, Reggie Girling died about 12 years ago while abroad on hols, and Les Fullerton was found in his flat covered head to toe in bruises died in hospital three days later that was about 8 years ago think there was something sinister about that one, Mickey Diffin and Chris Blythe also have left us, see Dave Connor at Les funeral and bugger me he died a month later, still see a lot of the old Tilbury boys now and again.   Hope I have cheered you up,  lol

    By andy reynolds (08/02/2015)
  • Yes Andy I remember them all, are they all still with us?

Your list jogged my memory leading me to remember Micky Hall, Mickey Diffin, Graham Head, Tony Litt, Ronnie Cousins, Tommy Harley, Barry Macklin, Chris Conlon, Alfie Jewis, Peter Hadleigh and Danny Gillam.

Chris I also remembered some of your old seafaring mates i.e. Dennis Goldstraw, Gordon Ryan and Billy Russel.

  • Hi Percy here are a few names for you to chew on, Barry Brooks, Dickie Penfold, Les Fullerton, Reggie Girling, Dave Carret, Robert Moss, Brian Tyson, Jimmy & Dave Connors, John Battie, Dennis Hales, Bobby Lockwood , Bubby Girt.

    By andy reynolds (06/02/2015)
  • Chris,

Reading all the recent comments over the last week or so has got my mind whirring a bit and a few names have suddenly come back to me after an absence of more than four decades! Do you still have contact with the likes of Colin Avery, Tony Clark, Mickey Lawson, Arthur Smith, Alfie Chapple, Malcolm Clarke, Vic and Anthony Lester, Brian the Greytels landburgher, Taffy Morgan, Sid Jackson and many more?

Carrying all those Bunsen burners and everything around in your briefcase must be beginning to pay off if you can afford to run households in Dubai, Indonesia and Walton on the name.

    Regards,

    Percy Dalton

I will do that when I am next in UK.

  • Hi Chris, There’s a pleasant surprise! Where do I start – yes I’m still in South Africa and still drinking beer but have given up the football. I still have fond memories of driving down to Yugoslavia in your brand new 1000 cc Mini and drinking Pivo in Pula some 47 years ago.

It would be great to get in touch properly but this site has a policy not to publish email addresses or telephone numbers but you could get my contact details from my brother, he’s still in Tilbury, it’ll be good to hear from you.

  • I remember you at Aveley Tech, and also the years after school before you left for South Africa. We played football and drank beer. Are you still in South Africa?

    By Chris Vinson (28/01/2015)
  • Thanks for the response Paul although I’m surprised that it took 5 months for classmate feedback maybe I’m living in a dreamworld but I did have visions of an avalanche of immediate replies. Looking at your reply I realize that it only takes a slight jog to start remembering things e.g. Mrs. Lawrence I’d totally forgotten but can now remember her vividly, and I think Mrs. Pankhurst was Mrs. Parkhurst? a rather stern Lady.

I’ll test my memory again (56 years on). I think you lived in or near Moore Road fairly close to the McLeods and you and your older brother (Richard?) plus two McLeods, Roger Robinson and Brian Johnson all went off to Palmers Boys, whilst Alan Scruby, Stanley Wright, Geoffrey Ring and Royston Woolley went to Grays Tech and Margaret White, myself and Eddie Patience attended Aveley Tech.

I left the UK in 1970 and have lived in Africa since and I often wonder in my glorious isolation what became of all those souls in our class photo.

  • Firstly – thank you to Percy! What a memory. As for teachers, I think there was a Mrs Pankhurst, a Miss Lawrence (music and needlework), perhaps a Miss Lelean? Mrs Gardner’s son Barry was at Palmers with me.

    By Paul Gilman (28/12/2014)
  • Yes, of course, Horsman. I can still remember her sitting on a huge cushion in the driver’s seat of her Austin A35 barely able to see through the windscreen.

    Percy Dalton

    By Percy Dalton (26/11/2014)
  • Percy – your memory has not failed you except that I think that the Head was Miss Horsman (but could be wrong). I also remember Mrs Gardner and a trainee teacher Miss Newell from Merthyr Tydfil (no idea why I remember that!). My sister (Elizabeth) and I were at Manorway from around 1956 to 1960 before moving on to Palmer’s secondary school. I have a picture of me and Digby taken around 1957 which I will try and post to this thread.

    By Paul Johnson (25/11/2014)
  • Does anybody remember teachers at both Infant and Junior schools?

From the Infant school I can remember Miss (we called them all Miss) Dines, Finch, Sedgewick and Harty. Then there was the headmistress Miss Horsnell and her deputy Mrs Atwell and her Labrador Digby.

From the Junior school there was Mr&Mrs Newman, Mr Weymouth, Mrs Rankin and for a short time a Mr Beehoe.

Can anybody remember any others or at least confirm that my memory is still functioning?

    Percy Dalton

    By Percy Dalton (12/11/2014)
  • Is there somebody out there who can confirm these names and fill in the blanks?
