Memories of Tilbury

By MAURICE PULLEN

I have so many memories of the river and ferry. When I was a lad I used the ferry just to view the PO and ORIENT etc that came to TILBURY. I used to pay 2d in old money on the ferry the EDITH or the car ferry from WEST STREET or the passenger one from the TOWN PIER. I used to hide downstairs on the ferry when they docked and just travel to and thro just to view the liners. Wonderful days I still use the ferry now to view but pay for every trip I am 84yrs old but still love the ships though all the grand old PO and ORIENT LINES have gone. Those were grand sights.

When I was stationed by the SUEZ CANAL in the army I used to see the PO ships sail by and it made me homesick knowing they were going to TILBURY. One thing I missed - I would love to have had a camera and glasses then but just could not afford them. Still had a wonderful childhood. My MUM took me to SOUTHAMPTON just to see the QUEEN MARY BLESS HER.
