About the project

The Tilbury Riverside Project was founded by Peter Hewitt in 1992 to promote economic, social and cultural regeneration in Tilbury and its environs.

Since then, the charity has been hugely successful winning numerous Thurrock Business and Civic Awards. In 2007, the charity was one of only a handful to be awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The charity has been involved in a number of different projects in its lifetime. The Two Forts Way, a pathway linking Coalhouse Fort in East Tilbury and Tilbury Fort, was created and developed over the course of a number of years.

Currently the project has a number of distinct focuses, including a HLF-funded oral history project in Tilbury and Chadwell St. Mary, the Tilbury Christmas Lights & FayreHeritage Open Days and coordinating community efforts to celebrate Tilbury’s Centenary in 2012. The charity is still actively involved in maintaining the Meadow Garden, a conservation area along the riverfront which preserves some of the rare flora and fauna of Tilbury’s estuarine marshes.
