The first bus (on the left) was on route 370 which ran from Tilbury Ferry to Romford. This route replaced Eastern National route 37A which only ran from Tilbury Ferry to Grays via Chadwell St Mary until London Transport took over the services in 1951. The other bus would be an Eastern National bus on route 40 from Tilbury Ferry to Brentwood via Grays and South and North Ockendon. The other Eastern National route at that time would have been the 53 to Clacton and Harwich which was often used by river pilots returning to their base.
