On Friday 21st June, the Essex Records Office played host to a party from the Tilbury and Chadwell Memories project.

The day started with a mini bus ride from the Tilbury Riverside Arts & Activity Centre to the ERO at Chelmsford.

At the ERO, we had a behind the scenes tour, looking at storage and conservation of documents, as well being given an introduction to the Sound and Video archive.

We also learned about SEAX, the on-line electronic catalogue to the record office holdings.

The staff of ERO then gave us an introduction to research and archive skills using documents in the record office with a focus on the Tilbury and Chadwell area.

This exercise included documents from the 2nd World War incident report about the bombing of the Tilbury Hotel. Other documents at the record office that provided additional information included electoral registers and directories.

The ERO staff pointed out that to get a complete picture, it is useful to visit more than one archive. Possible sources include the Thurrock Museum; Births, Marriages and Deaths and the Commonwealth War Graves
