Visit to the Essex Record Office

18th October, 2013

Tilbury and Chadwell Memories Group at the ERO
ERO

On 18th of October, seven of us from the Tilbury and Chadwell memories project visited the Essex Record Office for an introduction to the Record Office, and how it can be used to help research. This was a repeat of a very successful visit earlier in the year.

We were given a tour of the search room, the archive store and the conservation area. This was followed by an introduction to the sound and video archive that included a recording of a lady from Manor Road rescued from the 1953 floods.

After lunch we were given a talk on research tips and techniques. This was followed by letting us lose in the search room to attempt to answer eight questions about the Tilbury Hotel – including who was the manager; how many nationalities worked there; what was found on the staircase after the fire and what replaced the hotel on the site?

Thanks to Neil and Hannah at the ERO for a very enjoyable day.
