We held an event for the Tilbury and Chadwell Memories website on Wednesday 13th March from 11am to 3pm. The day looked at the history behind the street names of Tilbury. There was a talk from Jonathan Catton and a free lunch.

On the 1911 Census My grandmother lived in Turners Row I have never been able to locate or find any history of this road. I think it was in the Broadway area of Grays any info would be appreciated

I attended the event which dealt with the history of street names it proved to be very informative. Jonathon touched on the origin of the name Lansdowne Road and of course the school which bears it’s name. I have carried out some research and have discovered that Lansdowne is a hill station in the Indian State of Uttarakahand and was named after the then Viceroy of India Lord Lansdowne in1887, his family name was Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice 5th Marquess of Lansdowne. He served in government as Foreign Secretary and secretary for War. Given the fact Lansdowne Road opens on to Calcutta Road and The East India Dock Company which owned and built Tilbury Docks this would suggest why the name was used. Hope this is useful.
