  • Spent many a happy hour getting car spares here 1961-1967. A dynamo for an Austin 7 which they tested. Parts for An Austin Atlantic which I finally sold them as a crashed car after an accident.

  • Beyond the wall at the back of the yard was the railway track known as the angle that joined the Tilbury Riverside / Fenchurch Street line with the Tilbury Riverside/ Southend line. The Engine sheds adjacent to the Railway Cottages can be seen in the background.

  • In the 1950’s my late father (Don Oakley) always did his own car repairs and servicing. As a young boy I often went with my father to Yallop’s for spare parts. It was always an interesting place to visit with lots going on. At the time we had a series of old fords FK6113 (1934) and GPU341. During WW2 my father was in a reserved occupation and served in the Grays Home Guard. One of his friends from those days was Arthur Yallop who was related to Bill and lived with his wife Amy in Victoria Avenue Grays. I think Arthur worked in Tilbury Docks. He was always very friendly towards me if intially a little scary. Arthur & Amy had a son (Clive) whose wedding reception I attended at Stanford-le-Hope very many years ago. My father died in Orsett Hospital in 1990 and Amy Yallop came to the wake which was at the King’s Arms in Baker St (Orsett) near where the Oakley family had lived and worked on the land for generations.

  • This was round the corner from our house. My younger brother had a Saturday job there in the early 60s and was known as the swafega kid because of the amount he had to use to clean his hands after a day at Yallops

  • Willie Yallop raced at the start of British stock-car racing. Here’s a photo from 1957 — they didn’t care if a wheel came off in those days: https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/19399395_1378144075554263_4385600377754221207_n.jpg?oh=34ca8b885412a52105582823535b7fec&oe=59CD330F
