I am a writer and I am researching life in Tilbury for a TV pilot script about the Merchant Navy. I have a personal interest. My father was a Merchant Navy officer – a marine engineer. He worked for OCL – a subsidiary of P and O for 30 years and his home port was Tilbury. I often visited the town and stayed at the Stella Maris Seaman’s hotel while his ship was in port. I was wondering if anyone had information about this place. I have looked on this website but there is no information.
I was wondering could anyone kindly point me in the right direction please? I would be grateful for anything you could provide. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

My mother worked there in 1967/68 Jean Snelling, we lived in dock road for a while, I vaguely remember this place as a toddler
I took my first trip as a Pax on Pallister Bay on her final voyage around the world before going to China for scrap.
One of 6 Pax capt. Turner and wife were on her.
We sailed front Tilbury where we had being staying waiting her arrival. We sailed around both capes so she was too big for the old canals.
I worked at the Stella Maris between 1991-2002. For a large portion of that time it was the National Headquarters of the charity ‘Apostleship of the Sea’. The National HQ of AOS moved to London. I can provide further information on the building if needed.
Hi,
I met my late but ex husband in The Stella Maris in spring of 1968. It was in the old misson site. He was 18 and in the merchant navy on cruise ships and I was 18 also and Student nurse at Orsett Hospital Group. As we were both under 21 we went and got married in Gretna Green on 5th November 1968
I can’t really add too much info I’m afraid but I worked part time with a friend of mine back in early 70s as a DJ. In their dance hall they had, from what I remember it was quite a new building back in those days don’t live there anymore but surprised they demolished it but I guess Tilbury isn’t the dock it once . was
I am from Tilbury but also a exwife of a merchant Seaman who done trips on OCL ships and done voluntary work at the Stella Maris in the 80s. The Stella Maris is now flats. I hope you get the information you need.
