Marking the centenary of the end of the Great War at Coalhouse Fort

Lighting the beacon

An event was held at Coalhouse Fort on 11th November, 2018 to mark the centenary of the armistice which ended the fighting in the 1st World War. A beacon was lit at 7.00 – one of over a thousand across the country.

Before the lighting of the beacon, there was a performance by the Thurrock Courts Players of the songs from Oh! What a Lovely War .

The names of servicemen from East and West Tilbury were read out. These included Robert Currie and James Diprose. There was also a reading from the letters of William Alma Cooper to the Grays and Tilbury Gazette.
