Conservative Club Tilbury

Known as The Blue House!

This photo was taken in the Conservative Club in the Broadway Tilbury Town. The photo shows from left to right Jimmy Benson, Fred Webb, unknown , Jack Watson, not sure but I think it was a man who lived on the Broadway and was a photgrapher, unknown, unknown ………..do you know who the unknown men are?

  • Ted Hewitt was my uncle He lived in Melbourne Road, moving to Chadwell St Mary when the old houses in Tilbury were demolished He used to get us tickets for their annual children’s party Afterwards we were entertained by a troupe I think they called themselves The Kiddy Kooms of London My brother Roy Clark who was married in August 1959 also held his wedding reception at the Blue House

  • I well remember just turning 18 and being taken to the BLUE HOUSE by Joe Beadle, I later married his daughter Pat. It was there I learnt to drink when Mild beer was 10d a pint and all the old boys sat there together. I remember Jim Benson, Fred Webb  and Ted Hewitt and many more but forget their names. Mr Clarke was the Secretary I believe he lived in Dock Road. I held by wedding reception in the hall upstairs and returned there later in life when family parties were held there by Queenie(Jordan)Deacon my late aunt. I remember a photo studio in the Broadway  I believe was Lyndon Studios where we were taken as children for a “posh” photo after we had been given a good wash.
