Memories of the Great War is a new book of brief accounts of 27 people associated with Thurrock and their role in World War I. It has been researched by the Thurrock Museum Volunteers. Unfortunately, there is no table of contents and no index. None the less, it is a fitting tribute to the local people who were part of the war effort.
Quite a few of these people are associated in some way with Tilbury or Chadwell. These include:
- Alice Maud Hawkins, from Tilbury
- Harold Keegan, from Tilbury
- Tom Brown, from Tilbury
- William Henry Harris, from West Tilbury
- William Thomas Humphries, who “died” in Tilbury Hospital
- Archie Smith, who worked at Bata
- Ernest Naylor, who spent his later years at Bennett Lodge, Chadwell
