Windrush comes to Tilbury - June 22nd 1948

The SS Empire Windrush brought the first generation of migrant workers from the Caribbean to England in 1948, playing an integral part in the origins of multi-cultural Britain.

On their arrival at Tilbury on June 22nd, 236 of the passengers were housed in the Clapham South deep shelter in south west London, many of them planning on only staying for a short time due to the fears of poor climate and bad working conditions.
