Allotment in Tilbury
As it was
This was after the clean up when some Thurrock Councilors visited the site.
This was before the clean up.
The same place after the clean up and new fence.
Another one before we started.
After the new fence and grass seed added.
A big clean up job.
Harry White rotavating the cleaned up plots.
Then it was levelled.
Making the levelling frame.
Ready to go to work.
Ready for the grass seed paid for by the Tilbury Forum.
View from the top of the flats when the grass started to grow.
Keeping the grass cut.
The one man that helped to keep the site nice.
And the Lady that picked up the rubbish
The grass looks better than the rubbish did on site
A nice crop of runner beans (some of you in the town would have had some of these to taste)
Some of the Veg we had on our plot
Just waiting for the crop
Just need picking up
Some ready for storage
Compair size to 250g of Stork
Buddy at work
Digging ready for winter ( the old way)
Digging some potatoes ( The old way)
Marking out the ground for new plots
Then I rotorvated the new plot ready to hand over
We had a visit from our local arsonist
The Fire Brigade opened the gate with there special key
We got a grant for some new fence
with help from Buddy
An Allan Scyth was used to cut the grass when it got long
Turning in Mustard that was sown as a green manure
As you can see we have become mechanized
Starting to plough a plot
The finished job
Shirley Planting Potatoes
Spliting the baulks by machine to cover the potatoes
The potatoes growing nicely
We even lift them using a machine

Hi Dave. I just wondered if you were related to a late Leslie Thompson? Only he moved away from Tilbury, and went to live in Barking during the 1980’s. But Originally he was a Tilbury man, and one of the things I always remember him saying to me,was that he had a brother who also had an allotment in Tilbury.
I just wondered if there’s any connection?
Best regards,
Tony
My Dad had an allotment on there, superb earth on that site, the amount of stuff he used to grow was incredible, he used to give it away to the pensioners in the houses next to St Chads where my Nan lived.
Buddy Goyett – what a legend that bloke was!
