Chadwell's war dead

Chadwell Cemetery

Chadwell St Mary Cemetery can be found on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website under THURROCK (CHADWELL ST. MARY) CEMETERY

There are 32 war graves here – all from the second world war as the cemetery wasn’t opened until 1925. The findagrave website shows only 92 records. Some of these are wargraves and I have placed one post WWII military death in service there – namely Lance Corporal Frederick Arthur “Toby” Allison.

The cemetery also contains the graves of these civilian casualties of WWII.

  • Herbert Wellington Atkinson
  • Bessie Vera Catchpole, nee King
  • John George Diprose
  • Bertha Elizabeth King
  • Ada Alice Rainbird
  • James William Rathbone
  • Doreen Emily Raven
  • Joseph Charlie Raven
  • Robert Raven
  • Rose Charlotte Raven
  • William Sutton
  • George Thomas Wisby

One further grave worth mentioning is that of Neil Robin Wright – a victim of the Twin Towers attack on 9/11.

  • I read that the Parish of St John the Baptist Tilbury Docks was formed from the southern part of Chadwell parish in 1903, and the cemetery wasn’t opened until 1925. What happened in that 22 years I wonder?

  • What is now Tilbury Town was in the parish of Chadwell, so many of them would have been buried in Chadwell churchyard.

  • Does anybody know where people who died in Tilbury were buried before Chadwell Cemetery opened?
