Childhood memories living here...

Station Restaurant or Top Canteen pub

My parents started running the Station Restaurant or Top Canteen pub, around 1970-71. Myself and my sister have happy memories of riding our bikes in our bedrooms and hallway as it was so big. it was their first pub as newly qualified publicans and holds fond memories of some great customers and life long friendships.

  • I went in the Top Canteen a few times when I was a little kid probably late 60’s or early 70’s. What I remember of it was being pretty empty with loads of floor space and a big sweeping curved stairway and the bars being long. I have a half decent picture of it from about 1988/89 somewhere in my collection of slides of which I’ve literally got 10’s of thousands of, so I can’t imagine it’ll ever see the light of day.

  • Hi Jane , i to have great memories of the top canteen , my dad and mum ran the scruttons club 1952/60 and my aunt and uncle ran the top canteen 1952 to the archer pub in Belus/ aveley was puilt in the 60’s .
My dad and mum both helped out at the top canteen . Especially my mum who ran the bottom bar lunch times to serve the docker on the breaks . I remember her hand pulling pint after pint of mild for them 13 pints per gang and lots of gangs worked in the docks . I always said later in life my mum suffered from arthritis inher hips and elbows . From pulling the pints.
