Memories of Tilbury Riverside Hospital

I completed my nurse training at Tilbury Riverside Hospital 1959 to 1962. Miss Ross was matron, and Prue, can’t remember the proper name of this much loved assistant matron. It was some of the best days of my life, Tilbury people were magical, wonderful.

  • I remember Veronica, your grandmother. She was in my year. A lovely person, such good humour, we had fun, all the time. Angela.

  • My grandmother Catherine Veronica O’Mahoney also did her nurse training during this time, does anyone remember her at all?

  • I had my appendix out in Tilbury hospital when I was 21 I’m now 76, the staff were lovely and I recall a young Irish nurse who was leaving to join a convent as she felt this was her calling. I often wonder if she managed to fulfil her dreams. I also recall the hospital was locked most of the time especially at night because of its proximity to the docks.

  • I also trained at Tilbury Hospital between 1961 -1964. My maiden name was Merrick I think I remember Angela who had a sister Mary who also trained at Tilbury. If my memory is right Mary became ward sister on Catherine Ross ward named after the retired matron Miss Ross. Mary later settled in Orsett.

  • Kitty Ross was my Godmother and I remember as a child visiting her at Tilbury with her long time friend from Arbroath, my Grandmother, Louie Graham. Lovely lady.
