  • The self-unloading bulk carrier STONES was built at Hamburg in 2001 and is of 17,357 tons gross and 28,115 deadweight. It is under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, although owned in Germany. Its manager is HJH Ship Management, of Caderberge. Together with other bulk carriers of similar size, it is on charter to the Norwegian group Mibau-Sterna, which is one of Europe’s largest suppliers of crushed rock and its area of operation has been mainly north-west Europe. The rock is quarried in large quantities near to the semi-remote Norwegian village of Jelsa, which at one time was a popular holiday destination and was known for its holiday homes. I don’t know what the locals think of 24/7 quarrying on their doorstep, although of course it would be the provider of jobs for the locals.
