  • My parents and I sailed from Tilbury on September 30, 1966 to (first stop) Quebec City and then to Montreal. We arrived at Montreal on October 9, 1966.
I was 9 years old at the time. I have some fond memories of the voyage!

  • I was one of a party of children organised by the Ford’s Dagenham Trade Unions to visit this liner. I remember certainly a few busloads of us. I was only 7 at the time. We were greeted by very beautiful Russian stewardesses and given sweets and cakes, as well as full tour of the ship in smaller groups accompanied by our Dad’s and their work mates. It was a very exciting and glamorous experience for us working class children. Far from fitting the stereotypes of Russians so prevalent today, my memory was of a friendly and kindly crew who seemed genuinely pleased to have us on board. The uniforms were impeccable, and as well as the kind women stewardesses, many of the young sailors made us laugh with various tricks and face pulling.. It left a deep impression on me, and we left with lots of souvenirs, I retain a warmth for the people of Russia to this day, and in my later years in my adulthood I was able to visit Russia based on an interest sparked by this remarkable visit.

  • We had to move elettra 111 to the end of Tilbury to make room for this ship in 1970

  • We went on board, shown round by the crew. They gave us lapel badges of the ship.  That was in 1966, perhaps the first time she called at Tilbury
