West Tilbury Village Archive

WEST TILBURY - KINGS HEAD.

I am currently compiling an archive of all things West Tilbury.  This includes buildings, people, families & experiences of those who have lived, worked or visited the village.

With the centenary of the WW1 armistice upon us I am researching the families of the parish fallen, several of whom came from Bryanstone Road.

I would be grateful to hear from anyone related to the fallen.

  • Dear Martin, most probably a forlorn hope, but working on the premise if you don’t ask etc.etc.
In your research of West Tilbury have you come across the the surname GILLHAM
My many times removed Grandfather born C1760 married in Woolwich Kent To Sarah Moore in 1787 was an Inn Keeper in Woolwich also various inns and coaching establishments in and around the Strand Westminster up to approx. 1795. George and Wife Sarah then go to to West Tilbury presumably to run another inn or hostelry in West Tilbury. From the parish records I have found George Gillham is being a witness to the marriage & banns of John Ellis and Susanne Peacher 0n 7th March 1799 by Rector Adam Gordon. George died shortly after and the Parish record at St. Mary Magdalene Woolwich Kent shows his death with an added note saying “from Tilbury” This was the church where he was married and some of his children were baptised. Sarah is shown remarrying in West Tilbury Parish on 6th December 1799 a (it had to be ) John Smith, also by the Rector Adam Gordon . And sadly there my search comes to an end. I have not been able to ascertain where George was born nor his parents. Several Family Trees link him to the Gillham family in Kent but have never produced any evidence to prove this.
Hope I haven’t bored you to death and don’t expect anything. Good luck in your own research. Kindest Regards Albert (Bertie) Gillham
