Lost Streets

Tilbury Gardens

Here is a couple of photographs I took in the early 80’s. The location is Tilbury Gardens, this was a small street just to the right hand side of the old Riverside station.

Sadly these fine buildings were swept away when the car park for the cruise terminal was built.

  • You’re right Brian, there has been so much industrial vandalism in the last 75 years. Belmont Castle in Grays was demolished during world war two, to make way for quarries. (“Grays Thurrock” by Barry Barnes, publisher Phillimore.) Today, the house would be given listed building protection; perhaps the wartime emergency need for materials overrode such considerations as preserving historic buildings.
