“Carpenter Jan is Antarctic bound” A Tilbury carpenter, Jan Bashnell, was sent to the Antarctic for two and half years to aid the contstruction of a base for the Bristish Arctic Survey. He applied following an advert in a newspaper and received a salary of £144 a week with all of his food, accomodation and equipment paid for. A farewell party was held at Tilbury Power station’s social club.
